Fake Pregnancy Announcements on Facebook

Have you noticed  that your friends are all pregnant on Facebook?  Well this is why!

This arrived in my facebook mail box this week:

Ok ladies, it’s that time of year again, let’s support breast cancer awareness!! So we all remember last years game of writing your bra color as your status?.
Remember last year so many people took part that it made national news and, the constant updating of status reminded everyone why we’re doing this and helped raise awareness!! Do NOT tell any males what the status means, let’s keep them guessing!! And please copy and paste (in a message )this to all your female friends to see if we can make a bigger fuss this year than last year!!!

The idea is to choose the month you were born and the day you were born. Pass this on to the girls only and lets see how far it reaches around. The last one about the bra went round all over the world. So you’ll write… I’m (your birth month) weeks and I’m craving (your birth date)!!! as your status. Example: Feb 14th= I’m 2 weeks and craving Chocolate mints!! January-1week Febuary-2weeks March-3weeks April 4 weeks May-5 week June-6 weeks July-7weeks August-8weeks September-9weeks October-10weeks November-11weeks December-12weeks Days of the month: 1-Skittles 2-Starburst 3-Kit-Kat 4-M&M’s 5-Galaxy bar 6-Crunchie nuts 7-Dairy Milk 8-Lollipop 9-Peanut Butter Cups 10-Meat Balls 11-Twizzlers 12-Bubble Gum 13-Hershey’s Kisses 14-Chocolate mints 15-jalepeno peppers 16-Cheetos 17-pretzels and dip 18-french fries 19-pizza 20-Italian sub 21-fish sticks 22-steamed crabs 23-pasta 24-ice cream 25-chocolate covered banana 26-cinnamon apples 27-kung pao chicken 28-eggrolls 29-chocolate covered raisins 30-donuts 31-milkshake

I actually received this twice.  I swear I get messages these several times a year about breast cancer.  Now the thing that is upsetting is the total disregard this might cause your friends and family going through infertility.  How would this make you feel if all of a sudden all your friends are posting this as their status and you have no idea what is going on?  At times it is hard enough dealing with all the pregnancy and birth announcements but fake ones to raise breast cancer awareness is just ridiculous!

  1. Thanks for your comment! :)

I’ve read a lot of blog posts about this (Stirrup Queens has a great one from a few days ago) and I largely agree with all of them. I’m actually pretty pleased by the response; everyone seems to be very critical of the meme and with good reason. I think it totally backfired, but in a good way that’s spawning more conversation.

I also think it’s interesting how we’re supposed to keep the “secret” of the meme from guys… because, yanno, only women get breast cancer. Oh, wait…
